Join Sylvia and Ars Antiqua for an evening of music by two of J.S. Bach’s sons - Carl Philipp Emanuel and Johann Christian – and their contemporaries. Through the music of Johann Sebastian Bach’s sons, we are given a glimpse into the very different musical worlds of Berlin and London. Carl Philipp, who worked alongside his mentor Graun composed highly expressive music that still defies categorization and was perfectly suited for the intimate private concerts given by his patron, Frederick the Great. Johann Christian, who studied in Milan, composed effervescent music for London’s concert halls and opera houses that pointed the way towards the Classical era. Along with his friend Abel, he started England’s first subscription concerts. The ‘London Bach’ and the ‘Berlin Bach’ could not have been more different. Following their own paths, they created a diverse repertory, each with their own unique perspective and style.

In Bach’s humorous Coffee Cantata, Ulysses Thomas, Elise Groves, and Andrew Bearden Brown find out how far a devoted coffee lover will go to maintain their habit! Also on this program is his thrilling 5th Brandenburg Concerto, written for flute, strings, and harpsichord solo, and a gorgeous Trio Sonata in G major.
