At the Clavichord in 17th century Europe: Music of Correa de Arauxo, L. Couperin, Frescobaldi, Froberger, Kerll, Picchi, and Sweelinck
Presented by the Boston Clavichord Society at Gore Place Mansion
Take an exciting journey through seventeenth century Europe and hear music that heralds the blossoming of the Baroque era. As we “travel” through Spain, the Netherlands, Germany, Austria, Italy, and France, we will hear how the composers of these nations seemed to have much more in common than the political and religious leaders of these lands, who were embroiled in bitter conflicts such as the Thirty Year’s War. European composers at this time eagerly studied music from beyond their borders, and sometimes traveled great distances to study with foreign colleagues. While this program reveals clear differences in national styles, in the end it actually reveals some intriguing stylistic similarities that show just how much these composers had in common. Indeed, the clavichord itself would have been a common factor for all these musicians, since that quiet hero of the keyboard world was a ubiquitous presence throughout Europe for centuries.
